HSBC in Canada

HSBC Bank Canada, a subsidiary of HSBC Holdings plc, is the leading international bank in the country.

Thinking differently

For 40 years, Canadian and international customers have counted on our ability to bring our global experience and perspective to evolving trends and issues in Canada – helping to build the economy for the future. No other Canadian bank has our global scale and no international bank has our local presence in Canada. We are part of an extensive network covering Europe, Asia, North and Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa.

No one is better placed to serve Canadian companies doing business here at home or internationally as well as individuals with an international outlook. In our three business lines – Commercial Banking, Global Banking & Markets, and Wealth and Personal Banking – we have expertise in trade and receivables finance, RMB, emerging markets funds, sustainable finance and infrastructure financing, and put managing financial crime risk at the centre of everything we do.

How we do business is as important as what we do. We build our business for the long-term – balancing social, environmental and economic considerations in the decisions we make.

What makes us different?

Being different is embraced here.

Thinking different is rewarded here.

And respecting different is valued here.

Our history

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited — the founding member of the modern HSBC Group – opened in Hong Kong in March 1865, and then in Shanghai one month later.

Here in Canada we’ve been connecting customers to opportunity since 1981 – and by 1985, had 12 branches. In 1986, HSBC purchased the Bank of British Columbia and their 41 branches, significantly expanding our branch network.

This was the first of many acquisitions including Midland Bank Canada (1988), Lloyds Bank Canada (1989), Metropolitan Trust Company of Canada (1995), M.K. Wong & Associates Ltd. (1996), Barclays Bank of Canada (1996), National Westminster Bank of Canada (1998), Prenor Trust Company of Canada (1999), Republic National Bank of New York (Canada) (2000), CCF Canada (2001), Intesa Bank Canada (2004) and Household Financial Corporation Limited (2008).

Today, HSBC Bank Canada is the seventh largest bank overall and a leading international bank in Canada.
